bio: Started in the Music world 1982 in cologne as a scaffolder for the Rolling Stones . From there on i worked my way all through Live Stage Performances, Local Crew , local crew chief Cologne . Manager for international Acts like Lizza Minnelli Carlos Santana, Pink Floyd , Genesis, Engelbert, Bon Jovi, Brian Adams, Michael Jackson,Gianna Nannini, european wide.
I worked for different Agencys like MAMA Concerts , Marek Lieberberg, Peter Rieger , Liippmann and Rau,Sunrise Concerts and for Bands directly as a freelancer. Later on became Rep. for American Gramaphone USA NE ,My Marriage and Birth of my daughter stoped me from Touring around.

Fractal psychedelic t-shirts for your dancing eyes

Interview with the main t-shirt designer of Fractalic Design. Talking about the prints and the festival life around the World.

- How long have you been designing Fractals? What got you into Fractal designing? And where does your creativity come from?

I first learned to recognize and admire fractals in my first psychedelic experience many years ago, and since then I see fractals everywhere I look, in the shapes of clouds, trees, flowers, moving water and even in a cup of coffee.

I could sit by the river for hours and just watch this fractal turbulent movement of the water constantly changing and evolving, transforming into new shapes, similar but completely new every moment, in that fast transformation of fractals I could see faces of strange creatures immerging and disappearing instantly, in the twinkling of an eye. To me, fractals are the essence of the true beauty in nature ,they are the aesthetics of mathematical magic formulas that shape everything in our world from the micro to the macro .they are the dynamic chaotic shapes of nature, far more complex and refined from the boring dead geometric forms of modernism.

-What software are you using to design with?

Few years ago I was surfing through the web, and was amazed to find programs that can create new fractals on the computer. To me it was like magic, playing with the formulas, being able to create new complex shapes, as if I was creating a brand new world. I started with simple programs on pc like Chaoscope, and continued with some more advanced programs like Mandelbulb3D, which is an amazing program, that completely sucked me in to a whole new mysterious 3D world of fractals.

The creation of a new fractal is always only the first step of a long process of forming my design. After I have an interesting fractal, I start working on it again in Photoshop, to fit it to the concept of a t-shirt. Sometimes, I would look for a face or an image within the fractal, and try to help it emerge up to the surface, and sometimes I will zoom in and out of the fractal reshape it in a more abstract way.

- What is your main ambition with your designs?

fractalic design.com is our new project. and Actually before that I was designing mostly women clothing that me and my boyfriend were selling for 6 years in Goa/trance festivals all over Europe, our shop name that time was ‘fairy-tale’. During that time, allot of men used to come into our shop, complaining that it’s really difficult to get special and beautiful men’s wear, as the only real unique designs are made mostly for women. Few of them suggested that most t-shirt prints in the market are only small-medium prints in the middle of the t-shirt and they would love to have some more effective prints. I realized that some men are tiered from the conservative fashion being forced on them in the mainstream fashion shops, some of them don’t want to conform into the idea that a man should be dressed up in a boring manner. Especially in festivals, men, just like woman, would like to stand up in the crowd and take a more active part in the aesthetic psychedelic celebration of the trance party. Oscar Wilde Once said “one should either be a work of Art, or wear a work of Art” and I thought – what a beautiful world it could be if we could do both at the same time.

- So you stopped making woman clothing?

After 6 years of designing for the beautiful woman of the festivals while all the time travelling throughout the world, I got a bit tired from designing woman clothing, which had to do much more with tailoring than with painting. And since my real passion was always painting and drawing I decided to start designing t- shirts prints, which has much more to do with arts. This doesn’t mean woman can’t wear our t-shirts and we are already working on girls figures.

Meanwhile I became an art student, and we decided it’s time for creating something new, so we started our new line fractalic design. We put up a workshop for printing next to our home and began with this new adventure. We do all printing ourselves and its great fun.

- Why should people wear your designs?

For me a really good party is always full of sounds, colors and psychedelic visuals, and this is not just the part of the decoration team, it is mostly all about the people you see around you.

In Woodstock for example there was no decoration at all, but the pictures remaining from that historical event are so interesting because of the people there, taking part in a psychedelic revolution. Each one of them looking like an art piece himself, and together, becoming a huge detailed fractal of people coming together, allowing themselves to be free. It is not about consuming fashion at all, it’s about giving and receiving psychedelic visual pleasure from the people around you that are sharing with you the time and space. It is not about ones ego, trying to look sexy and astonishing, it’s about forgetting yourself and becoming a part, a microcosms inside the big vibrating colorful fractal called the dance Floor.

- Do you use any black light sensitive paints in your printing?

For now we do not use any of those colors since we feel it’s been done so many times before and starting to lose its effect. We try to concentrate more on making a very impressive and noticeable t-shirts without the use of black light colors. Still, the white print designs might shine.

Everyone who has tried to produce minimal techno music at the top level must surely have met with the fundamental problem which is missing suitable samples that have the characteristics of a dirty minimalistic sound in their collections. Many of the samples from the available basic drum collections are not really useful, and there is a lack of minimal techno samples on the market which could be bought in the standard e-shops.

From our experiences we know that from 90% of techno sample packs, produced by competitors, only classic samples are usually useful like kicks, claps, hi-hats, but they are missing the most important of them: synthetic, dirty, minimal percussion, industrial sounds, robotic drums, scary hits, dusty clicks and scratches which sounds like a weak scratched radio signal from a far-away NASA space station attacked by evil aliens. The sound of drums that you never know where they are coming from. The creepy woods of the Amazon jungle or from a far, unknown mutant civilization, dark dirty noises and breath taking massive percussive f***ing beats. Simply put, the basic structure of each great techno track was always a big problem to achieve and even more difficult to produce. But …

Are your drums or percussion sounding unprofessional, boring and flat? Were they recorded in poor acoustic conditions or just missing transients, punch or energy? Or maybe it’s vice versa and their sound is too sharp and aggressive?

No problem! Transient shaping system+ is tool intended to fix most possible problems with your drums or percussion and give them a fresh modern sound, punchy shape and adapt their envelope or transients to your requirements.

Transient shaping system+ is not a dynamic processor that is controlled by input level amounts (like a compressor). Overall sound is controlled and shaped by its own dynamics and transients!

Mr. Jaro Valo, senior mastering engineer from Analog Dimension mastering studio explains :

“More than 70% of mixes from garage bands and home producers of electronic music we get for mastering are missing percussive energy, drive and transients on drums/percussion, they are sounding simply flat. While mix-engineers probably do not realize that tracks will be additionally compressed and limited during mastering and dynamic range/transients will be reduced by compressors, limiters during every professional mastering outfit to achieve desired loudness of record. So it is important to send transient-rich and punchy recordings to the mastering studio. Only then the final record will sound rich, fat and professional. Input mix should not be sounding flat, with squashed beats and without noticeable transients. Drums affect everything: dynamics and sound of the full song as well as behavior of the master compressor, limiter, etc”

While Transient shaping system+ is primarily aimed at controlling transients of Drum or Percussion, it can be used on all instruments including guitars, keys, vocals, synths…

Let’s see some examples of using transient shaping system+ :

Are your drums recorded in poor acoustic conditions, sounding spilled and has too much recording room long reverb? Try preset: Beat – Short release

Are your drums missing energy, transients, modern sound or punch: Try preset: Beat – Punchy! Beat – Short and punchy, or Beat – Gentle boost.

Are your drums sounding too sharp and aggressive, presets: Beat – Very soft, Beat – Softer attack will probably fix your problem.

Do you want to have drums sounding like gentle Jazzy brush percussion: Beat – Jazz brushes 1, 2 or 3.

Are your drums sounding too sterile, void and empty, missing fat analog sound, presets: Beat – Analogue, Beat – vintage compress. or Beat – FAT will give them desired analog warmth and charisma.

Do you want to transform your drums or percussion into a background FX-style drum line: try preset Ultrashort.

Please understand that every item is different and it is nearly impossible to set presets that will fit every drum sample, so please adjust included presets to your recorded material.

Featured highlights:
Transient control – long: algorithm for controlling and shaping transients “from the perspective of a longer period of time (in milliseconds)”. Attack and release knob for setting shape of transients/beat envelope and transient amount knob for setting amount of boosting transients/envelope shape, set by attack and release knob.

Transient control – short: similar algorithm to Transient control – long just aimed to controlling, shaping and boosting transients/beat envelopes from the perspective of a short period of time (in milliseconds)

By combinations of short and long transient control you have full freedom to shape the transients / envelopes of your beat. For example: you can keep long transients in your beat but with just lower volumes (by setting a lower value of transient amount on the long transient control module) and in parallel, add a short and punchy transient boost by setting high values of transient amounts on the transient control – short module.
Input and output volume knob: similarly, as with an analog outboard you can affect overall sound by setting the level of input volume.

Saturation shaping of transient control – short/long module: if there are too sharp and intensive volume peaks / transients after boosting with TSS+ and you don’t want to compress/limit with additional compressors, you can transform the sharp shape of the transients into rounded analog sounding peaks / transients with transient shaping control.
Saturation shaping is not basic saturation of overall sound that adds higher harmonics as you know from vintage machines, it is just saturation/rounding of the signal from the transient control module long/sharp by which are multiplied original transients of the dry signal.

Bypass for comparing your track with and without the effect

Dry/Wet knob for precise setting how much of effect will be applied

Preset manager with 20 precisely selected example presets for electronic and acoustic Drums and Percussion.
